Natural Skin Rejuvenation

Microneedling & facial acupuncture

Unlike Botox or fillers, these treatments work with your body's natural healing mechanisms to create lasting improvements in skin texture and tone, no downtime, no chemicals. Facial acupuncture uses fine needles to stimulate collagen production, improve circulation, and enhance the skin's natural radiance. Both can be done individually or combined for enhanced results.

Improved Skin Tone

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often about acupuncture, orthopedic care, women's health, massage, herbal medicine, and scheduling at Orthopedic Alternatives.

Home / FAQ
General Acupuncture FAQs
What can acupuncture help treat?+
Acupuncture can help with a wide variety of conditions, including neck and back pain, joint pain, headaches, sciatica, sports injuries, arthritis, stress, anxiety, digestive concerns, insomnia, allergies, women's health concerns, fertility support, pregnancy discomforts, and postpartum recovery. Our providers create individualized treatment plans based on your unique health goals.
Does acupuncture hurt?+
Most people are surprised by how comfortable acupuncture is. The needles are extremely thin, about the width of a human hair, and many patients feel little to nothing when they're inserted. Many people often become so relaxed during treatment that they fall asleep.
How many treatments will I need?+
The number of treatments depends on your condition, how long you've had it, and your health goals. Acute injuries may improve in just a few visits, while chronic conditions often require a series of treatments followed by occasional maintenance visits to help keep symptoms under control.
What should I expect during my first visit?+
Your first appointment includes a thorough health history, discussion of your concerns and goals, and a comprehensive evaluation. After your assessment, your provider will explain your treatment plan before beginning acupuncture. Most first visits last between 60 and 90 minutes.
Should I eat before my appointment?+
Yes. We recommend eating a light meal or snack before your treatment and staying well hydrated. Avoid coming in on an empty stomach.
What should I wear?+
Wear loose, comfortable clothing whenever possible. Depending on the area being treated, we may ask you to roll up sleeves or pant legs or provide appropriate draping to ensure you're comfortable throughout your treatment.
Orthopedic Alternatives FAQs
Do you only treat pain?+
Not at all. While we're known for treating orthopedic conditions and injuries, we also help patients with fertility support, women's health, pregnancy care, postpartum recovery, headaches, stress, digestive issues, allergies, insomnia, and overall wellness.
Can acupuncture help injuries?+
Absolutely. Acupuncture can help reduce pain, improve mobility, decrease inflammation, speed recovery, and support healing for many sports-related injuries. It's commonly used for tendonitis, muscle strains, sprains, overuse injuries, and post-surgical rehabilitation.
Women's Health & Fertility FAQs
Can acupuncture help with fertility?+
Yes. Acupuncture can support both natural conception and assisted reproductive treatments by promoting healthy blood flow, regulating menstrual cycles, supporting hormone balance, reducing stress, and preparing the body for pregnancy.
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?+
Yes. Acupuncture is considered very safe during pregnancy when performed by a trained provider. We commonly help relieve nausea, back pain, hip pain, pelvic discomfort, headaches, swelling, sleep disturbances, and prepare the body for labor when appropriate.
Do you offer labor induction acupuncture?+
Yes. Once your pregnancy has reached full term and with approval from your healthcare provider, acupuncture may help encourage the body to prepare for labor naturally.
How can you help after my baby is born?+
Postpartum care focuses on supporting recovery, reducing pain, improving energy, promoting healing, helping with stress and emotional well-being, and restoring balance after childbirth. We also offer massage therapy and specialized craniosacral bodywork for both mothers and babies.
Massage & Specialized Care FAQs
What types of massage do you offer?+
We offer therapeutic massage tailored to your individual needs, including deep tissue techniques, relaxation massage, and specialized bodywork to help reduce pain, improve mobility, and promote recovery.
What is the Gillespie Approach?+
The Gillespie Approach is a gentle craniosacral fascial therapy that works with the body's connective tissue to release tension and restore function. It is commonly used with infants experiencing breastfeeding difficulties, tongue tie restrictions, reflux, colic, torticollis, and other birth-related tensions, while also benefiting adults experiencing chronic pain, headaches, jaw pain, and nervous system dysfunction.
Herbal Medicine FAQs
Do you prescribe Chinese herbal medicine?+
Yes. Chinese herbal medicine is often used alongside acupuncture to support healing and improve treatment outcomes. Each herbal recommendation is customized to your specific condition and health goals.
How do I take Chinese herbal medicine?+
At Orthopedic Alternatives, we customize every herbal formula specifically for you and your unique health concerns. Rather than using one-size-fits-all products, your practitioner selects herbs based on your individual diagnosis and treatment goals. Our herbal formulas come in a concentrated granular form that easily dissolves in warm water and is typically taken as a tea twice a day. The granules are convenient to prepare, travel-friendly, and provide the same therapeutic benefits as traditional herbal decoctions while fitting more easily into your daily routine.
What conditions can Chinese herbal medicine help with?+
Chinese herbal medicine is commonly used to support a wide range of conditions, including pain and inflammation, digestive concerns, allergies, stress and anxiety, sleep issues, women's health, fertility, pregnancy and postpartum recovery, immune support, and overall wellness. Herbal medicine is often prescribed alongside acupuncture to enhance treatment results and promote lasting healing.
Why do you recommend both acupuncture and herbal medicine?+
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have been used together for thousands of years because they complement one another. Acupuncture helps stimulate the body's natural healing processes during your appointment, while herbal medicine continues to support those processes between visits. When appropriate, combining these therapies can help improve outcomes, support faster recovery, and provide more comprehensive care tailored to your individual health needs.
Insurance & Scheduling FAQs
Do you accept insurance?+
We do not bill insurance directly from our office. Payment is due at the time of service, and we accept credit cards, cash, checks, HSA cards, and FSA cards. Many insurance plans offer reimbursement for acupuncture. Upon request, we are happy to provide a superbill or any necessary documentation for you to submit directly to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Because every insurance plan is different, we recommend contacting your insurance provider to verify your out-of-network acupuncture benefits. Payment is collected at the time of your appointment.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?+
In many cases, yes. Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) can often be used for acupuncture treatments. We recommend checking with your plan administrator. We also accept credit cards, cash, and checks.
How do I schedule an appointment?+
Scheduling is easy! You can call our office or contact us through our website. We'll help match you with the provider and treatment that best fits your needs.

What Is Acupuncture, Really?

A modern scientific look at how acupuncture activates the nervous system — and why it works for over 100 conditions recognized by the World Health Organization.

Home / Blog / What Is Acupuncture, Really?
By the Orthopedic Alternatives Team
Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing systems in the world — and also one of the most misunderstood. Many people picture it as a mystical practice with no scientific basis. The reality is quite different. Modern research has shed considerable light on exactly how and why acupuncture works, and the results are compelling.

The Nervous System Connection

When an acupuncture needle is inserted into a specific point on the body, it stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals either change the experience of pain directly, or they trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system.

The improvement in energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.

What the WHO Says

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends acupuncture for more than 100 symptoms, conditions, and diseases. This includes chronic pain, neurological conditions, digestive disorders, respiratory issues, fertility concerns, skin problems, stress, anxiety, and much more.

At Orthopedic Alternatives, we specialize in the natural treatment of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions — with a focus on reducing pain, improving mobility, and enhancing circulation.

Does It Hurt?

This is the most common question we hear. The short answer: usually not. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine — much thinner than a hypodermic needle. Most patients feel little to no discomfort during insertion. When the needle reaches the correct depth, you may feel a sensation of heaviness, warmth, or a mild ache — this is called the "arrival of Qi" and is a sign the treatment is working.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The effects of acupuncture are cumulative. An average treatment plan involves 8 to 10 treatments, though improvements are generally noticed within the first few sessions. For chronic or complex conditions, we may recommend 1–2 sessions per week for several months.

Sports Medicine Acupuncture: What Makes It Different?

Certified Sports Medicine Acupuncture® blends Eastern medicine with modern orthopedic science. Here is what sets it apart from traditional acupuncture — and why athletes love it.

Sports Medicine Acupuncture

Certified Sports Medicine Acupuncture® (C.SMA®) is a specialized, integrative approach that combines Traditional Chinese Medicine with modern sports medicine principles to effectively assess, diagnose, and treat musculoskeletal injuries and athletic performance issues.

How It Differs from Traditional Acupuncture

Unlike general traditional acupuncture, which often focuses on systemic patterns and energetic imbalances, Sports Medicine Acupuncture emphasizes orthopedic evaluation, functional anatomy, manual muscle testing, and advanced needling techniques to address specific injuries and biomechanical dysfunctions.

This style bridges Eastern and Western medicine — using palpation-based diagnostics and precise needle placement to affect muscle function, joint alignment, and pain pathways, while still incorporating the foundational principles of traditional Chinese medicine.

What Conditions Does It Treat?

Sports Medicine Acupuncture is highly effective for: sprains and strains, tendinopathies, rotator cuff injuries, IT band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, stress fractures, postural imbalances, and performance recovery. It is used by professional athletes, weekend warriors, and anyone dealing with movement-related pain.

About Our Practitioner

Elizabeth Eberius, LAc, C.SMA® is a Certified Sports Medicine Acupuncture® Specialist and Functional Mobility Specialist — one of a select group of practitioners in Wisconsin with this advanced certification. She combines her C.SMA® training with functional movement assessment to create individualized treatment plans that address the root cause of your condition.

Acupuncture for Fertility: What the Research Shows

Can acupuncture help you get pregnant? Here is what current research says about acupuncture's role in supporting natural fertility and IVF outcomes.

Fertility Acupuncture

Fertility challenges affect millions of people, and many are turning to acupuncture as a natural complement to both conventional fertility treatments and as a standalone approach. As a medical doctor from Brazil and licensed acupuncturist specializing in women's health, I have seen firsthand how much acupuncture can support the fertility journey.

How Acupuncture Supports Fertility

Acupuncture supports fertility through several mechanisms: regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (which controls hormone production), improving blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, reducing stress hormones like cortisol that can interfere with ovulation, and supporting overall health and immune function.

IVF Support

Acupuncture is commonly used before and after embryo transfer during IVF cycles. Research suggests that acupuncture administered on the day of embryo transfer may improve implantation rates. We work in coordination with your reproductive endocrinologist to time treatments appropriately within your IVF protocol.

Conditions We Address

Acupuncture for fertility can help with: PCOS, endometriosis, irregular cycles, poor ovarian reserve, unexplained infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, and male factor infertility. It is also deeply supportive for the emotional toll of the fertility journey — reducing anxiety, improving sleep, and restoring a sense of wellbeing.

Ready to start your fertility journey? Call +1 (920) 241-3719 to book a consultation with Bruna.

Microneedling vs. Facial Acupuncture: Which Is Right for You?

Both treatments rejuvenate skin naturally — but they work differently and target different concerns. Here is how to choose, or how to combine both for the best results.

Home / Blog / Microneedling vs. Facial Acupuncture
By the Orthopedic Alternatives Team
Facial Rejuvenation

Two of our most popular services are Acupuncture Facial Rejuvenation and Microneedling. Patients often ask us which one they should choose. The honest answer? You do not always have to choose — but understanding how they differ will help you decide what is right for your skin goals.

Acupuncture Facial Rejuvenation

Acupuncture facial rejuvenation involves the insertion of ultra-fine needles at specific points on the face and body. It works by stimulating collagen production, improving circulation, and balancing the body's energy — which shows up as improved skin tone, reduced fine lines, and a natural glow. Because it treats the whole person, not just the face, patients often notice improvements in energy, sleep, and stress levels alongside their skin results. Best for: specific wrinkles, sagging, and overall facial vitality. Recommended frequency: weekly for best results.

Microneedling

Microneedling uses a device with tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries across the skin's surface. This triggers the body's wound-healing response, producing new collagen and elastin. It is particularly effective for improving overall skin texture, reducing acne scars, minimizing pores, and addressing hyperpigmentation. Best for: overall texture, tone, scars, and pores. Recommended frequency: monthly.

Combine Both for Best Results

You do not have to choose. For patients who want comprehensive skin rejuvenation, we recommend combining both: 1 Microneedling session plus 3 Acupuncture Facials per month for 3 months. Your entire epidermis regenerates every 1–3 months, so this protocol catches the full cycle and delivers the most significant, lasting results.

Not sure which is right for you? Call +1 (920) 241-3719 and we will help you figure it out.

Craniosacral Therapy for Infants: What Every Parent Should Know

Craniosacral Fascial Therapy is one of the gentlest and most effective treatments for newborns and infants dealing with tongue-tie, colic, torticollis, and birth trauma.

Craniosacral Therapy

As a Craniosacral Fascial Therapist and Licensed Massage Therapist, one of the most rewarding parts of my work is helping newborns and infants find relief from conditions that can make early life — and breastfeeding — incredibly difficult. Craniosacral Fascial Therapy (CFT) is one of the gentlest, safest, and most effective tools we have for this age group.

What Is Craniosacral Fascial Therapy?

CFT combines craniosacral therapy with fascial release techniques to address tension patterns throughout the entire body — from the skull to the sacrum and everywhere in between. The treatment is extremely gentle. For infants, the pressure used is typically no more than the weight of a nickel. There are no harsh manipulations or adjustments.

Conditions It Helps With

CFT is particularly effective for infants dealing with: tongue-tie (before or after frenectomy), lip tie, colic and excessive crying, torticollis (neck tightness/head tilt), breastfeeding difficulties, latch issues, birth trauma from forceps or vacuum delivery, and general fussiness or sleep difficulties.

What to Expect at a Session

Sessions typically last 30–60 minutes. Your baby can be held, nursing, or lying comfortably during the session. Most infants are calm or even fall asleep during treatment. Parents often notice changes in feeding, sleep, and comfort within 1–3 sessions.

Questions about CFT for your infant? Call +1 (920) 241-3719 to speak with Chailey.

Chinese Herbal Medicine: What to Expect

Herbal medicine has been used for thousands of years to restore balance and treat disease. Here is how it works at Orthopedic Alternatives and what you can expect from a prescription.

Home / Blog / Chinese Herbal Medicine
By the Orthopedic Alternatives Team
Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is one of the oldest and most sophisticated pharmacological systems in the world. Unlike Western pharmaceuticals that typically target a single receptor or pathway, Chinese herbal formulas use combinations of plants, minerals, and natural substances that work together synergistically to address the root cause of illness.

How Formulas Are Prescribed

At Orthopedic Alternatives, herbal formulas are prescribed by our nationally certified Chinese Herbologists after a thorough consultation. We look at your full health picture — not just your main complaint — to craft a formula tailored specifically to your constitution, current condition, and health goals. No two formulas are identical.

What Forms Do Herbs Come In?

We offer several forms depending on your preference and condition: raw herbs (decocted/boiled into a tea), powdered granules (dissolved in hot water), and capsules or pills for convenience. Your practitioner will recommend the most effective form for your situation.

Are They Safe?

Chinese herbs are generally very safe when prescribed by a trained, certified herbologist. It is important to always disclose any medications you are taking, as some herbs can interact with pharmaceuticals. Our practitioners are trained to screen for interactions and will always take your full medication list into account before prescribing.

Interested in herbal medicine? Ask about it at your next acupuncture appointment or call +1 (920) 241-3719.
