Acupuncture - Different Approaches

Medical acupuncture is a more modern, evidence-based approach to acupuncture that integrates Western medical knowledge with traditional acupuncture techniques. Medical acupuncture is typically used to treat physical conditions such as pain, inflammation, muscle tension, and stress. The focus is on the body’s anatomical structures, such as nerves, muscles, and tissues, with treatments aimed at stimulating specific points to activate the body's natural healing processes. It is often used in conjunction with conventional medical treatments, making it suitable for patients seeking a more integrative approach to health care.

The integrative approach at Orthopedic Alternatives blends the best of modern and traditional acupuncture approaches, allowing for a more comprehensive treatment plan that can address a wide variety of health concerns effectively. Styles of acupuncture offered by the team at Orthopedic Alternatives include:

  • Certified Sports Medicine Acupuncture

  • Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

  • Korean Acupuncture

  • Scalp Acupuncture

  • Microneedling

Acupuncture is often used alongside conventional medical treatments, medications, before and after surgery, physical therapy, massage therapy, and chiropractic care. It can enhance the effectiveness of other treatments, support healing, and reduce the need for medication.

Acupuncture - Initial Visit

This appointment will last 60-90 minutes and includes an introductory acupuncture treatment. During this visit, you will be interviewed regarding your current condition, lifestyle, and overall health. Relevant medical history will be reviewed and you are encouraged to bring any recent lab work, imaging reports (x-rays, MRI, ultrasound, etc.), current medication lists, or any other information you would like to provide. After performing any necessary diagnostics and examinations, we will discuss your current concerns and develop a treatment plan tailored to your wellness goals.

Acupuncture - Follow-Up Treatments

A regular session will last around 45-60 minutes, and will include a brief interview followed by treatment. Treatment may include acupuncture and adjunctive therapies (electrostimulation, cupping, moxibustion, or body work).  An extended session of 75-90 minutes can be booked if additional time is needed for your care. Herbs and supplements may also be suggested depending on the condition.

Acupuncture's effects are cumulative and are most effective when administered in a series of treatments.  However, the number and frequency of treatments varies from patient to patient. It is generally recommended to receive acupuncture one to two times per week to begin with, especially when the condition is acute.
